Here at Grand Liquor on Johnson Drive in Mission, KS, things are pretty normal these days. We’re open nearly every day of the year, ready to help you stock up on your favorite beer, wine, or spirits. That said, Kansas still has a few quirks when it comes to liquor laws—like not being able to sell alcohol on certain holidays. Strange, right?

But believe it or not, that’s nothing compared to some of the laws that used to exist in our state. Let’s take a quick trip down memory lane and look at some of the weird liquor laws Kansas used to have.

No Sunday Sales

Up until the early 2000s, Kansas didn’t allow liquor stores to sell alcohol on Sundays. That meant if you forgot to pick up your wine for Sunday dinner or your six-pack for the big game, you were out of luck. Cities eventually got the option to allow Sunday sales, and thankfully, Mission is one of those cities that said yes. Today, you don’t have to plan your weekend beverages around outdated restrictions.

The 3.2% Beer Era

For decades, Kansas allowed grocery and convenience stores to sell only 3.2% beer—sometimes jokingly referred to as “near beer.” That meant if you wanted a real brew with a normal alcohol content, you had to make a separate trip to the liquor store. This law was in place all the way until 2019, when Kansas finally modernized and let grocery stores sell stronger beer.

Other Odd Kansas Liquor Laws

Kansas has had more than its fair share of strange rules:

  • No Happy Hours: Until 2012, bars weren’t allowed to offer discounted drinks during specific times of day. Instead, they had to discount them for the entire day if they wanted to run a special.

  • Private Clubs Only: Believe it or not, Kansas didn’t allow public bars until 1987. Before that, you had to be a “member” of a private club to legally order a drink.

  • Holiday Restrictions: Even today, Kansas prohibits liquor sales on certain holidays, including Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. So if you’re planning ahead, make sure you swing by before those dates!

Thankfully, Times Have Changed

Kansas has slowly loosened up many of these restrictions, making life a lot easier (and a little more fun) for adults across the state. Here at Grand Liquor, we’re glad to be open almost every day of the year, offering you a full selection of beer, wine, and spirits without the outdated rules of the past.
